Lucas Del Mar is a marine painter working along the New England coast who seeks to distill from the raw experience of exploration the visual poetry of light and color.
Descending from a long line of Maine sea merchants, he gravitates toward the edge between land and sea, seeking those moments of perception, so plentiful in coastal New England, that suspend us in a state of timelessness. Brushes and film camera in hand, Del Mar can often be found traversing harbor, sand, and seaweed-covered rock, his eye fixed upon a maritime scene, searching for the perfect angle at which to depict the fair curve of an immaculately crafted wooden hull. He returns to his studio to meditate upon his travels using the techniques and media of the renaissance masters: oil paints, optical refraction, and a dash of catoptromancy. No digital technologies are employed in the making of a Lucas Del Mar painting. The genius of the past is evident in the result. |
